A Gypsies Heart

Like magic every autumn they would appear in the village. They would set up camp on the village green with brightly colored wagons with fresh flowers and silver bells hanging from the doors. The villagers stayed away from them and the Gypsies stayed away from the villagers. They would stay overnight then disappear with the north wind... until one magical, autumn morning.

Jill, the local rich landowner’s daughter, walked to school as always. Her thoughts on the day at school and the homework she would have to do, when suddenly she stumbled on a loose stone. Her books flew from her arms and fell in a pile on the ground. As she bent to pick them up a tanned hand picked up the book she had reached for.

She looked up to see who had kindly come to her aid and gazed into the soft brown eyes of a boy. A gypsy boy. He smiled and held his hand out for her to take… helping her to her feet and then he bent, picking up her books and handing them to her. Jill smiled but before she could say thank you the boy had walked away.

Jill spent the rest of her day wondering about the boy. He had looked handsome with soft, brown, soulful eyes and she wonder if she would ever see him again.

He was waiting at the gates when she left school at the end of the day. She knew that her father would be angry if he knew but she felt she needed to say thank you and then she would go home…

He’s name was Kip, and hours later she knew all about his life. He had taken her in to the woods and shown her a family of foxes… showed her the healing herbs and where the faeries hid. He told her about his travels around the world…and he listened to her talk like no one had ever before.

The Gypsies would leave that evening, taking Kip with them, because of that they talked about everything as if they had known each other for years... When it began to grow dark Kip took her to the gypsy camp and in the moonlight they danced and sang around the camp fires.

As the hours passed Jill fell more in love with the gypsy boy with soulful brown eyes… But time was passing and at midnight he brought her back to her home. In the light of the full moon kissed her… and handed her a small tin… inside lay a small, red, heart-shaped talisman … “I give you my heart, Jill”

The next morning Jill rushed out of the house to the village green hoping that the wagons would still be parked. However, the green was empty, the only sights that they had been there was the blackened grass from their camp fires and a forgotton gold ribbon tied to a tree branch.

Eight years passed Jill was now eighteen, her father had arranged for her to marry a young man from the next town over. She should have been happy but there wasn’t a day she didn’t look into the old tin; at the heart shape charm Kip had given her.

Kip had told her that the gypsies would travel to Europe, then on to their homeland of Romania. He didn’t know when they would come back but Jill held on the hope each time the northern wind blew that it would be the day that the wagons would magically appear on the village green.

The old woman in the gypsy wagon turned to pick up my cup and examine the tea leaves, ending the story she had been telling.

“But what happened in the story?” I asked, “Did Kip ever come back? Did Jill marry the man from the town?”

The old fortune teller smiled and glanced at someone sitting behind me… I turned around to see the old man sitting on a red stool. His face was aged with lines ; his hair white but his eyes were young. They were soulful, soft brown eyes and in his hand he held an old tin and inside that was a red, heart-shaped talisman.

The old man laughed and handed the heart to the old woman and gave the tin to me. " My beloved Wife seems to think that you will give your heart to someone soon. You may need this to keep it in"

As I left the fair I couldn't help but wonder about the fortuneteller's prediction.Would I find my true love?

"Have you ever seen a baby fox?" asked a handsome young gypsy. "No," I replied, looking into his soulful soft brown eyes. " but I'd like to."

The end
